Growing up in Wilmington, North Carolina hometown of Michael Jordan in the 1980’s I naturally progressed as a basketball fan, but as it became clear that I was destined to never reach six feet tall my ideas wandered to endurance sports. Watching Mark Allen and 7-Eleven/Motorola on television I became interested in running and cycling both of which are sports that one can continue to enjoy with age unlike basketball or football. Today I am a high school teacher and assistant cross country coach in Asheville, North Carolina. One of the biggest perks of teaching is not the paycheck, but the fact that I get to watch every stage of the Tour de France live each summer.

In 2004 I traveled to France to see Lance’s six Tour win and hope to return again one day to see a new generation of American cyclists compete. Working with a generation of young people who are excited about endurance sports and watching the coverage of cycling expand I am excited about the future of this beautiful sport.
