Matthew Busche (born May 9, 1985 in Iowa) is an American road racing cyclist who turned professional in 2009 riding for UCI Continental Pro Team Kelly Benefit Strategies. Though he has not had time to amass a lengthy record so far he has shown that he’s capable of solid performances in climbing stages and Time Trials against serious competition.
A college runner in cross-country, the 10k and the steeplechase, Busche (pronounced boo-SHAY) turned to cycling to stay fit while nursing a knee injury as a freshman. Though he went back to attain All American status as a collegiate runner, he decided to turn his full attention to cycling in 2008 where he quickly enjoyed success. At the start of the 2009 season he had the advantage of riding almost unknown, but that ended quickly as he distinguished himself as a name to be reckoned with in the many races he contested that year. His compelling results and untold potential have catapulted him from a Category 2 rider to the pinnacle of the sport in just 2 year’s time.
His results to date include: 2nd Best Amateur Competition Nature Valley GP, 3rd Stage 2 Gateway Cup in 2008, Wisconsin State Road and Time Trial Champion, 1st Proctor Cycling Classic, 5th overall Vuelta de Bisbee, 5th overall National Road Race Championships, 5th Stage 3 Vuelta Chihuahua International, 6th overall Univest Grand Prix in 2009.

I’m glad there’s no one around here to bet with cause I would have put up good money that Matthew was born in Iowa but grew up and raced in Wisconsin. This explains why I don’t play poker! Thanks for reading and keeping us straight, please stay tuned.

Currently at Luther College, and rode with Matt numerous times and still train with training buddies of his. Definitely the guy I look up to and hope to continue the tradition of pro cyclists out of Decorah, Iowa!

Matt (Flip) obviously had some real gifting and talent, but his cycling career actually really took off after he trained for a winter in Tucson Arizona.

Saw him race many times as an amateur in Wisconsin for the IS Corp Cycling team. In a 2009 crit -that included a short steep hill-the guy started the race over a minute late, and managed to catch the field halfway through the race. Then he went with a break 4 or 5 man break that included Ryan Bauman (Trek Livestrong). Then Busche pulled away from that group to win the race! Amazing talent! Also, as a side note: Bjorn Selander reps Wisconsin well too!

I grew up with Matt’s older brother Aaron who we called “Bush”, and therefore Matt was “Shrub.” I coached and watched him run in Highschool so to see him doing this well is amazing. Anyone know why he isnt on the radioshack team for the Tour de France though?

also, his hometown is Wauwatosa, WI and he attended Wauwatosa West HS.

I grew up with matthew “shrub” as bradley put it. I ran with matthew all through our middle and most of highschool years. He is a gifted athlete that seemed to have to drive to excel in any sport he put his mind to. He is a gifted individual and I am excited to see him taking advantage of his skills.
