Lance Edward Armstrong (born Lance Edward Gunderson on September 18, 1971) is an American professional road racing cyclist.
He won the Tour de France a record-breaking seven consecutive years, from 1999 to 2005. He is the only individual to win seven times, having broken the previous record of five wins, shared by Miguel Indurain, Bernard Hinault, Eddy Merckx and Jacques Anquetil. He has survived testicular cancer, a tumor that metastasized to his brain and lungs in 1996. His cancer treatments included brain and testicular surgery and extensive chemotherapy, and his prognosis was originally poor.
In 1999, he was named the American Broadcasting Company Wide World of Sports Athlete of the Year. In 2000 he won the Prince of Asturias Award in Sports. In 2002, Sports Illustrated magazine named him Sportsman of the Year. He was also named Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year for 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005. He received ESPN’s ESPY Award for Best Male Athlete in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006, and won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Overseas Personality Award in 2003. Armstrong retired from racing on July 24, 2005, at the end of the 2005 Tour de France, but returned to competitive cycling in January 2009.

Lance,
Seriously, dude. You have some well qualified applicants here, but consider this.
I’ve been following your career for like 8 months now and felt very inspired by your performance at the “Tour”. So much so, that I ran down to Walmart the other day and purchased a sweet Mountain Bike ($189 American). Now, this baby can climb! There is a Radio Shack, like 4 miles from my house on top of a steeeeep hill. I’ve been doing training runs daily (ok, maybe not every day). That’s 8 large round trip! If, you are looking for some strong riders, I am available. Got bike, will travel! Also, how come you don’t use Mountain Bikes on Mountain stages? Sounds like an oversight on your coaches part. I am telling you, with my bike, I am up that hill like a mountain goat, 20 min. tops, then I fly downhill like a devil. Like I said, tweet me dude!

Lance – How’s Texas? I’m a doc in the Air Force and have been stationed in Tx several times. Now working at the Bethesda National Naval Hospital in DC. Our boys (and I) will never forget the years we lived in Texas, Maryland, Florida, North Carolina, Alabama and spent each July glued to the TV watching the Tour (since 1999). We all bought nice road bikes and have been avid riders since. Thanks for all you do and have done for fighting cancer. Several of our relatives have had cancer and your inspirational history of not only surviving cancer, but what you’ve done for cancer research and awareness, and the will to survive is second to none! Keep going Strong … many are behind you!

I would like to accenuate your LiveStrong awareness program even further via a blog of your daily input combined with my experience on current cutting edge biological cancer research, support, treatments. A daily blog of your activity and Team Radioshack, coupled with front line cancer treatment news would draw national, if not
international…daily…attention. That is what we need to generate consistent, daily, acknowledgement of cancer, and the continued generation of funds for basic science research. If your interested in what we might be able to work out, drop me a line at thomas.L.brown@wright.edu
Promoting cancer awareness and research to treat or cure cancer is paramount and my utmost interest.

Lance, because of you I am as fit as I am today. I didn’t watch you live but after I saw you cross the line for the last winning time (in 2005, I was 15) and heard your speech, I thought maybe it was worthwhile looking into. I was a skeptic. I laughed at cyclists who wore the short spandex shorts and the shaved legs, but I watched your battles through the mountains, and instantly became hooked on cycling. You have truely become the icon of cycling, and because of the motivation you have given me, I am now in the military with a very fit body and a mindset to always do better. I push myself beyond any limits I have ever thought possible. Thank you for everything. Livestrong!

Thanks for giving the Belgian cyclists a spot in your team, I really hope Gert & Sebastien will perform good this season and all other seasons for team RadioShack.
Even though Merckx is a Belgian I liked your way of cycling more than his. And after all the false accusations you stayed clean and that is just the way it should be.
Good luck with team RadioShack & Livestrong.

My family has followed cycling and especially you since 1994. My son and I have not missed watching a tour since 1999 and look forward to it every year. My Son ran track at the University of Louisville and always used you and Pre has motivation to succeed not just in sports, but in life. My son was diagnosed with Lymphoblastic Lymphoma on 5-15-07, when he was air-evaced to IU Medical center We wanted to get him there because we read your book and new that is where you had some of your treatment. After 8 rounds of Chemo, a relapse, more chemo and radiation and then a bone marrow transplant, He is doing well. Cancer is in remission. He continues to draw on you for inspiration. There were some very dark days when we would continue to go back to your book for encouragement. We want to thank you for all that you have done and continue to do. You and my son, along with some amazing Doctor’s and nurse’s are my true hero’s.
