This didn’t sound like the Lance Armstrong known to roil the emotions of cycling fans, eliciting love and admiration from most and scorn from a vocal few.
The seven-time winner of the Tour de France has been known for his supremely confident persona, whether blowing past the competition on his lightweight racing bicycle or giving a speech about surviving cancer.
Doubts were for lesser folk. Doubts were a sign of vulnerability, and that’s not the face of this Texan.
Yet 48 hours before the start of the Amgen Tour of California, an eight-day stage race that stops in Santa Cruz and San Jose on Tuesday and Wednesday, Lance Armstrong was using the D word liberally.
“I’m a rider who hasn’t had a lot of doubts,” he said Friday at a pre-race news conference in Sacramento. But “sometimes there are days I have had doubts.”

This year is the most exciting lead up to the Tour that I have ever felt. And there have been some very exciting ones. Its because the possibilities are all there for the grabbing. But the challenges are daunting. Its gunna take some Magic. And I believe Team RadioShack has pulled together the greatest group of magicians.
Lance’s successes in the past and his way has helped more athletes believe in themselves than ever. So the field are extraordinary.
And there’s some added bonus’ for me. There’s a ‘changing of the guard’: the old guys, journeyman, are holding out before the youngsters become the main ones to watch. Then there’s the Texan (Texan’s being legendary as underdogs – Alamo; cancer fighters) pitted against the Spainard. El pistolaro, speedy gunzalos….A guy who inspires fans to cheer for the other guy. But he’s fast and super talented so it makes it fun & interesting. The white hats against the black. Only with a twist, an oxymoran, cuz this white hat likes to wear black.

I think Lance is keeping a low profile. He is very reserved. I believe it is a strategy to keep his opponents guessing.

I care not for the doubts of a wise man, for he knows better than any of us, what his strength’s are and where they lie. There are those amoungst us, like myself, that have had a tube in our hearts with chemo to stop our cancers, we live day to day, for a man to survive and win, it is an acheivement for all to envy.
