Lance Armstrong from Team Radioshack, the seven-time Tour de France winner, is coming to Edmonton in August and will get a chance to ride with me again.
Last month he shot by me in an iota of a second when I was cycling on Hawaii’s Big Island. Unlike most cyclists, he didn’t even give a nod.
“He probably spotted you were riding a Greg LeMond bike and wanted nothing to do with you,” says Cam MacKenzie, owner of Edmonton’s Elements Multisports store. “They have never been the best of friends.”
LeMond in 1986 became the first American to win the Tour de France. He was accidentally shot and seriously injured by his brother-in-law in a hunting accident the following year and took two years off before returning to win in 1989 and 1990. “Of course you can’t rewrite history,” said LeMond, “but I’m confident I would’ve won five tours.”
HAVING LANCE AN HONOUR
Cancer survivor Lance Armstrong is making his first visit to Edmonton to support the work of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Prairies/NWT Region.
“To have arguably one of the most well-known and influential cancer advocates in the world visit Edmonton as a supporter of the CBCF is truly an honour,” says Trish Bronsch, the organization’s regional CEO.
On Aug. 25, Armstrong will attend a fundraising luncheon at the Shaw Conference Centre and the next day he will lead a 100-kilometre scenic bike ride in the Edmonton area.
“We hope the luncheon will draw a large crowd,” says the CBCF’s Tracy Sopkow. “Expect tickets to be about $200 each.”
The sum to accompany Lance on a ride hasn’t yet been decided.
“We are waiting for the excitement over the Olympics to die down next week before we announce it,” says Sopkow. “We hope some 40 cyclists will pedal with Lance. They will stop for rests and lunch. A website giving corporate partnership opportunities will be up next week.”

I’m am sooooo, bummed out by this. I live in Edmonton and leave for Penticton to compete in Ironman Canada the day before Lance arrives in my hometown. Fortunately I have purchased a VIP pass for the final day of the Tour de France so with a little luck and a lot of begging hopefully I can meet Lance.
