There has been a lot of attention focused on the new up-coming rider Taylor Phinney, and Danish national television (DR) featured Phinney in a sports news show after the first stage of Tour of Denmark, 2010.
They follow Phinney’s preparations during the early hours of the morning of the first stage in the Danish race. He is naturally excited as this is his first day as a professional rider for Lance Armstrong’s Team Radioshack. Phinney: “I am really excited, relaxed and ready to get racing.”
Taylor Phinney is being hailed as one of cycling’s biggest talents and he has already won the Individual Pursuit (UCI Track World Championship) twice, as well as winning U23 Paris-Roubaix twice. In 2010 Phinney also showed top form when winning the Olympias Tour in Holland, where he won 4 out of 7 stages.
A lot of people expect that Phinney is going to be the rider who eventually will take over after Lance Armstrong, who has just returned from his last Tour de France.
Phinney: “Now that Lance is going away there are a lot of people who are wanting someone to fill that space. A lot of people are pointing to me, and there is not much I can do about that, other than train hard and ride for the right team. Lance sort of picked me up and took me under his wing, as we would say in the US. So he has been sort of a mentor, and like a big brother for me for the last couple of years.”
Phinney also spoke to the spectators at the rider presentation before the first stage of the Danish race: “I am here to learn and there are a lot of smart people in my organisation. And I am here in Denmark, which I love, just racing and learning.”
Phinney crashed shortly before the finish of stage one, but he finished and is ready for stage two.
