Chris Horner

Hey, Chris Horner!  You’ve won tenth place in the 2010 tour de France.  What are you going to do next?

He’s not going to Disney World.  He’s going to Maine.  Chris Horner has decided to ride beside 2,000 of his new friends in the 2010 Dempsey Challenge. (http://www.dempseychallenge.org)

Actor Patrick Dempsey, (Dr. Derek Shepherd on the ABC series Grey’s Anatomy) is a Maine native and his Mother is a 3 time cancer survivor.  Patrick opened the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing in Lewiston on March 31st, 2008.  The center offers support and resources to cancer patients and their family members, free of charge.  The Dempsey Challenge is a fund raising event taking place this year on October 2nd and 3rd.  On Saturday the 2nd runners will have their day with a 5k and 10k run and a Fun Run for the kids.  On Sunday the 3rd, cyclists from all category levels will embark on 10, 25, 50 and 100 mile cycling tours through the Maine countryside, all to raise awareness and money for cancer research and support of those affected by cancer.

Chris Horner of Team RadioShack, along with George Hincapie of Team BMC will be part of the cycling events on Sunday the 3rd.  There are rumors of other cycling stars showing up as well.  The Dempsey Challenge is not a race, but rather a series of cycling tours.  There will be those who will do the courses for time, and there will be those who will just be glad to finish.  Having important names in the cycling world take time from their busy schedules to make an appearance in support of a noble cause at a local event, speaks volumes about where they come from and what is important to them.

I will be taking part in the 50 mile tour as I turned 50 this year.  I’m involved because my son is a cancer survivor.  If you’re interested, you can see my donation page at http://dempseychallenge.kintera.org/faf/donorReg/

I look forward to possibly meeting Chris Horner and shaking the hand of, and congratulating the tenth place holder of the 2010 Tour de France.
